Kenyan Village Named Among Best Tourism Sites in the World [PHOTOs]

As the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) recognised some of the best tourism sites in the world, a prehistoric village in Kajiado County made it to the list.

Olergasaile village was named among the best tourism villages in the world among other 44 villages that had been identified.

In a statement released by the Kenya Tourism Board on Wednesday, January 12, it was revealed that the village played part in the study of the evolution of mankind further urging Kenyans to visit the prehistoric village.

"They say that anywhere you go becomes a part of you in some way. So today we ask you to journey with us to Olergasaile Village in Kajiado County, a charming little place rich with heritage that exemplifies Kenya's vast diversity.

"For everyone who enjoys cultural immersion, this UNWTO awarded village should be on your travel list, having been one of the 44 villages from 32 countries that were recognized by UNWTO" read the statement in part.

Olergasaile was discovered by British explorers Mary and Louis Leakey. The village is popularly known for the stone axes that were used by the early man.

"The site is world renown as the “factory of stone tools” and has the highest number of hand axes anywhere in the world representing some of the first camping places of early man," read the statement in part.

The prehistoric sites in the village are estimated to be over 700,000 years old with some of the hand axes preserved to date.

Among the prestigious stones that were discovered in the village include the Acheulean handaxe, which is associated with the Homo Erectus and is estimated to be 800,000 years old.

Additionally, the village was recognized for its rich culture as it is located in the Olergasaile conservancy which is dominated by the Maasai Community.

The serenity of the village has also seen locals venture into income-generating activities as the village has become popular as a camping site.

During his visit to the village, Tourism Cabinet Secretary, Najib Balala, stated that the award was achieved through concerted efforts by the community members to preserve the rare gem.
