Turkana has always been defined as an area that experiences continuous drought, famine cases, and extreme hunger.

What most are not aware of is that the county also possesses lush green vegetation, surrounded by pristine waters as well as alluring scenic views.

Located in an idyllic corner, surrounded by vast silence, the town itself is a picture postcard blown to the scale of real life, Turkana also widely regarded as 'the cradle of mankind' is positioning herself as a major tourist destination.

With the holidays fast approaching Kenyans.co.ke decided to rummage inside what the town has to offer.

Also known as the Ille springs is a small oasis located at the sandy beach, lapped by the warm pristine waters and surrounded by the towing palm groves provides a coastal retreat for beach lovers.

The sandy beaches have great water pleasure activities you can enjoy with friends and family.

Additionally, the area has resorts such as the Eliye Springs Resort, Boma and  Rondavel, which run restaurants that offer international a la carte menus for you to enjoy, you can also get to experience exemplary customer services and accommodation.

Accommodation ranges between Ksh 6,000 and Ksh 15,000 depending on the resort.

Central Island

The island has a unique volcanic landscape brimming with birdlife. It is home to hundreds of species of birdlife the island offers a flyaway passage and a stopover for migrant birds from North Asia and Europe.

Additionally, the island has a number of activities you can take part in, such as visiting the three crater lakes which consist of the Tilapia, flamingo and crocodile lake.

You can also go for speed boat riding across the lakes, however, ensure you adhere to safety measures and watch out for crocodiles.

Boat rides cost Ksh 18,000 per trip.

A Hike at the Hills of Lodwar

If you enjoy hiking you can always climb up the hill and catch amazing views, at the top of the hills you will see a statue of the famous Rio Christo Redentor commonly known as the statue of Jesus Christ.

Road Trip Towards the Jade Sea

Jade Sea so-called for its green waters to the Chalbi Desert has an indigenous forest merged on the desert.

Here you can enjoy boat excursions to different destinations within the area. If you enjoy fishing, there are over fifty fish species in the lake that you can either fish during the boat excursion or at the shores.

Turkana has amazing sand dunes that have beads, ostrich shells and a number of artefacts that you can spot on the sand. You can also take part in sandboarding activities across the Turkana Sand Dunes.

Nariokotome has a range of endless activities you can take part in such as visiting the lagoon which is surrounded by flamingoes feeding in the area.

Additionally, the area has a small ridge where you can visit the Turkana Boy Monument that has fossil skeletal remains of a 1,600,000-year-old pre-modern human being.

The reserve has a vast expanse of wildlife variety that you can get to see. It is a home to leopards, buffaloes, zebras, elephants, gazelles and warthogs

The reserve has the largest occurrence of  Kori Bustards 

Additionally, the area has a large occurrence of avian species such as the Kori Bustards. 

Namoratunga Standing Stones 

Also known as the Kalolol pillar or the Namoratunga II, the dancing stones are some of the most intriguing archaeological sites in the country. You can get to enjoy scenic views of the area.
