Isiolo Governor Dr. Mohammed Kuti has quit politics after serving for only one term as county boss.

The Governor, who was poised to defend his seat in the August 9 General Election, revealed that he would step back after falling ill.

Kuti, who is a trained surgeon, was last seen in public three months ago. He has been sick since December 2021.

He explained that he made the decision after a meeting with Sakuye Clan elders in Nanyuki.

He later endorsed Nairobi County Assembly Majority Leader Abdi Guyo as his preferred candidate for the top seat.

“I have consequently dropped my re-election quest.

“You see, time (to kick off campaigns) is running out and because I am leaving the political scene. We must bring in other leaders for continuity,” stated the Governor.

The departure comes six months after the county's elders endorsed the Governor to defend his seat. Kuti had ascended to the county's top seat after serving as the county's senator.

On October 31, Kuti received backing from elders in the 12 clans who vowed to support his re-election bid.

"We have endorsed him honourably, in good faith and we are together with him day and night," stated Maalim Madera Godana, a Sakuye Council of Elders at the time.

The governor had also accepted the challenge and promised to work together with the line-up that the elders had fronted ahead of the polls.

"I will work together with the Party as well as the lineup so that they can support us to succeed in 2022," he stated.

Kuti had spent 20 years in active politics and rose to become the Minister for Livestock from 2008 to 2013 during former President Mwai Kibaki era.
