Zimbabwe which is led by President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, revealed plans to honour Uhuru coincide with his upcoming state visit to the Southern African country.

Among the streets proposed include Hillside Road from Samuel Parirenyatwa to Cecil Avenue, 12th Avenue Extension from Samuel Parirenyatwa to Cecil Avenue, and Banff Road towards Hillside Dams.

The decision to honour Uhuru follows a letter written by the Minister of Local Government and Public Works, July Moyo to Bulawayo City Council (BCC) requesting for the streets to be named in honour of Kenya's President.

"We have received a request to name a street in the City of Bulawayo after the President of Kenya, His Excellency Uhuru Kenyatta in terms of the Names (Alteration) Act Chapter 10:14," the City Council stated.

Zimbabwe will join a number of other nations which have honoured Kenyan politicians by naming roads and streets after them.

In Nigeria, Kenya's first President Mzee Jomo Kenyatta has a street named after him in Enugu State. The 0.12 kilometers Jomo Kenyatta Street is next to Aso.

The founding president has also been honoured in Sierra Leone with the naming of a road after him. Jomo Kenyatta Road is next to the Ministry of Health and Sanitation and is located in the Western area of  Sierra Leone. It is1.1 kilometers long.

In Tanzania, former retired President Mwai Emilio Kibaki has also been honoured. Former Old Bagamoyo Road in Dar-Salaam was renamed to Mwai Kibaki road.

In Kenya, streets have also been named to honour some top leaders. Julius Nyerere who ruled Tanzania as president from 1964 to 1985 has a street named after him, Julius Nyerere Road.

Former Ghana leader Kwame Nkurumah also has a road named after him in the country, Nkrumah Road in Mombasa.

The naming of roads has been interpreted as one of the ways of strengthening diplomatic ties between countries.
