The family of Brian Olunga, the aide of Brian Khaemba who was contesting for the Kimilili Parliamentary seat, disclosed that they learnt about the passing of their kin through social media.

Speaking to the media on Friday, August 12, the deceased's father explained that he received a call from a friend who then broke the news of Olunga's death via a WhatsApp message.

According to Olunga's father, his son had informed him that he was running electoral errands only to receive the tragic news hours later.

"I was called by my friend from Navakholo who informed me that a man trending on various media platforms resembled my son," the father stated.

"I told him my son was in Bungoma running some election errands. He asked me if I had WhatsApp, and I opened the mobile application. That is when I learnt that it was my son who was murdered," the emotional father added.

On the other hand, the deceased's mother revealed that her son was the family's sole breadwinner. Overcome by emotions, she stated that Olunga was her firstborn child, calling on the government to expedite the investigations into his murder.

"I was shocked after his father informed me that my son was murdered. I felt the pain as he was my firstborn child. I just need the government to serve us justice because we cannot stomach the pain," she stated.

One of his friends also told the media that before receiving the tragic news, they had a lengthy conversation on the ongoing polls and his role.

"We spoke till late at night and he informed me that he would call me the following day," the friend stated.

"As we had agreed, I sent him a message but he did not respond. Later that evening other friends kept sharing photos telling me that he had been shot dead. So I called him but his phone was not going through, that is when I realised that he was dead."

The deceased was allegedly shot dead during a commotion at Chebukwabi polling station.

Kimilili MP-elect was implicated in the murder with the Director of Public Prosecutions, Noordin Haji, ordering for his arrest.

"DPP Noordin Haji has given directions to have Hon. Didimus Barasa apprehended, record a statement and have the relevant file availed to his office for appropriate action. Barasa who is the incumbent MP, Kimilili Constituency, was reported to have shot and killed Brian Olunga, on 9th August 2022 at Chebukwabi Polling Station.

"Olunga was a bodyguard to Mr. Brian Khaemba, who was Mr. Barasa's opponent in the elections. According to police in Bungoma, the MP is still at large and his phone is switched off," the Office of the DPP stated.

Barasa presented himself to detectives at the Bungoma Police Station, promising to co-operate in determining who is responsible for Olunga's murder.
