Education Cabinet Secretary, George Magoha, has assured parents that the government will not disrupt the school calendar anymore after postponing the resumption date.
On Wednesday, August 17, Magoha noted that a petition will be filed to challenge the presidential results and the Supreme Court may order a repeat election.
The government, the CS stated, will deliberate and give a way forward putting into consideration the safety of all learners.
Despite schools being used as polling stations, the ministry would rather keep students in school than send them home since voting is a day's exercise.
"They (students) can be asked to play games and stay in their hostels," he stated.
CS Magoha also reiterated that the schools will resume on Thursday 18, 2022.
On Saturday, August 13, Magoha postponed the reopening of schools citing the ongoing vote tallying exercise.
"Following the conduct of our National Elections on Tuesday, August 9, 2022, the process of tallying ballots is still ongoing.
"Therefore, following further consultations, I hereby convey the Government's decision on the suspension of the re-opening of all Basic Education institutions with effect from Monday, August 15, 2022, until Thursday, August 18, 2022," the statement read.
He apologised to parents and guardians for the inconvenience and also informed education stakeholders that the decision was made to ensure the safety of all learners.
"We apologise for any inconvenience occasioned by these changes and ask for your indulgence, as we work through ensuring the safety and comfort of learners through this period," he added.
He also maintained that learners would report back to school after the midterm break if the environment is safe after the General Election.
