Acting Director of Criminal Investigation, Hamisi Massa, has refuted reports claiming that he criticised Rigathi Gachagua after the deputy president appeared on Citizen TV interview.

Gachagua, in the interview, asserted that the DCI ought to be headed as a professional agency and not a drama queen.

In a statement dated October 4, the newly appointed DCI boss refuted that he hit back at the DP while addressing a meeting convened by the Auditor General.

He reiterated that he made no reference to the DP in his statements, distancing himself from quotes used by various media publications.

"The acting director asserted that, as a professional body with a crucial mandate in the criminal justice system, the DCI investigates serious crimes that have far-reaching implications within the country and where the crimes are transnational in nature.

"This is thus to clarify that at no point did the Ag DCI mention or refer to the DP or any other government official in his remarks, hence the newspaper headline presents a misreported and uncredited position," read the statement in part.

During the interview on Citizen TV on Sunday, October 4, Gachagua criticised how the investigative agency conducted its investigations, particularly under former DCI boss, George Kinoti.

"We are looking for a professional DCI, not a politician, not a drama queen. DCI officers are in civilian clothes because they are supposed to be discreet so that they are able to carry out investigations in a discreet manner, but we had a DCI who was always in the press. He made a whole confusion about the DCI.

"We want a professional DCI who will not spend his time on drama, on the press and will investigate cases properly, get evidence, and get a conviction," he stated.

Massa was appointed in an acting capacity by the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) after his predecessor, George Kinoti resigned.

NPSC declared the position vacant and asked qualified candidates to apply for the post.
