The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has announced a motor vehicle auction exercise of over 440 vehicles situated in different customs warehouses.

In a notice issued by the authority, the owners of the impounded vehicles failed to remit taxes and other charges.

According to KRA's chief manager in charge of port operations, Rose Mureithi, the owners were handed a thirty-day lifeline to clear the arrears and pick their vehicles before the auction date slated for Thursday, December 15.

The vehicles include various models such as Volkswagen, Mistubishi, Subaru Forester, Lexus, Nissan Note, Nissan X-Trail, Mazda Cx-5, Probox, Subaru Legacy, Toyota Vit, Honda Fit, and Mercedes-Benz.

Others include Toyota Harriers, Suzuki Alto, Audi A3, Toyota Crown, Peugeot,  Mazda Demio, Toyota Hiace, Volvo S60, Toyota Wish, BMW X5 Subaru Imprezza, Land Rover Range, and Cruiser Prado.

Aside from vehicles, other items, that were considered surplus, include personal items, promotional items, construction materials, food products, clothing materials, spare parts, housing items, sound systems and electrical equipment.

“Pursuant to the provisions of section 42 of the East African Community Customs Management Act, 2004, the notice is given that unless the under-mentioned goods are entered and removed from the Customs Warehouse within thirty days from the date of this notice they will be sold by public auction on December 15, 2022,"

Interested bidders were advised to access the full list that was published in a Gazette notice Volume CXXIV-No.238.

The list details information regarding the vehicles including the lot number, ship name and date, date of arrival, container/chassis marks and number, container size, consignee, manifest number as well as the bill of lading (BoL) number.

Regarding the prices of the vehicles, a source privy to the information intimated to Kenyans.co.ke that the pricing is usually confidential and is normally unveiled on the day of the auction.

The source, however, confirmed that the sale would be subject to reasonable prices depending on various factors including the vehicle's model.

How to Bid

Interested bidders seeking to participate in the auction exercise will have to physically make an appearance at the Customs Warehouse on either Tuesday, December 13, or Wednesday, December 14.

They will then be handed a document with the prices of the vehicles and assorted items. To obtain a bidding number, one must pay a refundable deposit based on the vehicle model in form of a banker's cheque.

The highest bidder will walk away with the vehicle or products of their choice.
