A senior police officer finally appeared in High Court to answer to murder charges two years after the alleged offence.
Chief Inspector Nahashon Mutua is facing charges of killing Martin Manyara, who is said to have succumbed to injuries sustained after being beaten by the officer at Ruaraka Police Station.
The incident took place on December 19 ,2013 when Mutua was in charge of the station before being transferred to Machakos.
The police boss was charged Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko approved the charges following investigations by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority.
IPOA said that Manyara had been arrested for threatening to end the life of his daughter but died after being battered by police in the cell.
Despite injuries the suspect sustained, he remained in custody only to be taken to hospital the next when he passed on.
Inspector Mutua however, said that he was not aware of the charges since the summons were sent to his initial work station at Ruaraka. He defended himself against accusations of ignoring court summons saying he came to know about the charges recently.
The officer is set to take plea on Wednesday.
Earlier reports released by various human rights organisations have criticised Kenya's security agents of mistreating suspects in a bid to get information from them. Deaths, disappearances and serious injuries have been reported in the fight against crime and terrorism.
