The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) on Wednesday announced traffic disruption along the bridge linking Kitengela to Mombasa Road.

The disruption was caused after the ever-busy bridge was submerged by flood waters that extended to the roads.

The bridge was submerged by floods resulting from River Athi which broke its banks due to the ongoing heavy rains currently being experienced in different parts of the country.

KeNHA thus directed motorists to use alternative routes by diverting through the East African Portland Cement junction through the Athi River to Devki.

While issuing the directive, the authority warned motorists against attempting to drive through the bridge until the water levels recede to safe levels.

"Your safety is our priority, please plan your journey accordingly," KeNHA announced.

In the widely circulated videos depicting the bridge's flooding, motorists could be seen stranded as they sought alternative ways of reaching the other side of the river.

The Authority also warned of a traffic snarl up along the Juja Road from Juja Mall, both on the highway and service lane.

Motorists were advised to use the service lane at Exit 14 and 15 until the water subsides.

"Githurai Car Wash service lane, Thika bound. Kahawa Sukari Engen towards KU main highway now passable," KeNHA noted.

"Motorists are advised to be cautious in these and other sections that may experience occasional flooding," the Authority added.

KeNHA's warning alert comes even as different parts of Nairobi county continue to experience adverse flooding effects, a situation that has also led to displacement of people and loss of lives.
