President William Ruto on Friday directed all cabinet secretaries to progress the planting of trees.
Ruto who spoke during a tree-planting exercise in Murang’a county, ordered all ministers to plant trees daily from Monday, May 13.
Ruto clarified that the project would be done for the next six months and every ministry would be allocated specific days for planting trees.
“We are not just planting trees today, from Monday, this exercise will continue ministry by ministry daily,” Ruto noted.
“For the next six months, every ministry will be in charge for a day for planting trees,” he added.
According to the head of state, the move was aimed at helping the government achieve its target of planting 15 billion trees.
The head of state noted the move would also help communities understand the significance of managing our environment.
"We want our development to be on a sustainable basis, by making sure that as we develop with harmony with our environment," the head of state revealed.
On March 21, Ruto expressed his displeasure after Cabinet Secretaries failed to comply with his instructions on the nationwide tree-planting exercise.
According to Ruto, he had instructed the CSs to draft and submit their plans and strategies for how they would ensure the project was a success.
However, Ruto noted that he had yet to receive any meaningful strategies and plans from the CSs on the nationwide programme.
“Every Cabinet Minister has already been assigned 2 counties and we will be expecting clarity. Every Cabinet Secretary and their team are doing on the tree planting exercise,” Ruto stated.
