A 5-year-old boy caught the attention of Kenyans after he was photographed planting trees alongside President William Ruto and First Lady Rachel Ruto in Murang'a County.
In the photos Ruto's press team shared, Quintine Gitau was fist-bumping with the Head of State, who officiated the National Tree Planting Day.
Unknown to many, that was the first time the Grade One student at Precious Jewels Primary School was meeting the Commander-in-Chief despite the strong bond depicted during the Friday holiday.
According to a statement by State House, the duo had only met at the Kiambicho Forest on Friday.
However, unlike other residents who found a challenge accessing Ruto owing to the tight security, Gitau managed to find his way to the President.
It was indicated that the Grade One student shook the hands of the President and started bonding from there.
"He bravely walked to where the President was and greeted him amid applause from the crowd. After addressing the residents, President Ruto held Gitau's hand as he headed to the area where trees would be planted.
"Gitau then went step by step with the President," read the statement in part.
According to the revelations by State House, Ruto would dig holes as Gitau helped him fill the hole with soil.
It was revealed that they planted close to 100 trees out of the 20,000 that were planted by the residents and Ruto's entourage.
"Gitau clearly demonstrated that climate action is a universal and collective endeavour. He stood out as an inspiration, proving that everyone, regardless of age, has a role to play in environmental conservation," read the statement in part.
Ruto is aiming to plant 15 billion trees by 2032. The National Tree Planting Day was gazetted as a public holiday to help the government achieve its target.
