Several people are feared dead after a landslide occurred at the Kimende escarpments in Kiambu County.
Reports suggest the landslide took place following a heavy downpour experienced in the area for a better part of last week.
While confirming the incident, the Kenya Red Cross Society revealed a rescue team had been dispatched to the area.
"A landslide has occurred in the Kimende Escarpments of Kiambu County. Several people are believed to be trapped," Kenya Red Cross announced.
"The Red Cross Action Team is en route to the scene."
The tragedy is said to have occurred on Tuesday evening at around 7 pm after homes near the escarpments were covered in falling chunks of soil.
In the heart-wrenching video seen by Kenyans.co.ke, a section of the victims could be heard shouting for help even as residents initiated attempts to help them.
Meanwhile, the exact number of victims involved in the tragedy is yet to be confirmed with rescue operations still underway.
Following the incident, the area was cordoned off and declared a danger zone.
Motorists and other road users plying the Kimende-Matathia Road were urged to seek alternative routes.
The incident happened barely a fortnight after the Kenya Meteorological Department warned of potential landslides in different parts of the country.
In its April 27 advisory, the weatherman highlighted that landslides were expected in the Mt Kenya regions, Western Kenya, and the slopes of the Aberdare ranges.
