The Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA) has announced the closure of the Meru - Mikinduri - Maua Road following a second landslide within 24 hours that occurred on the stretch early Saturday.
In a statement, the agency announced that the affected area, near Maua town, is currently impassable after heavy rains in the region.
As such, the agency advised motorists plying the route to use alternative routes, to and from Maua town.
“KeNHA wishes to notify and caution motorists plying the Meru - Mikinduri - Maua (B102) Road of a second landslide that occurred in the aforementioned road section earlier today,” read part of the notice.
“The KeNHA team is actively on-site working diligently to clear the road and ensure the safety of all motorists,” the agency further stated.
On Friday, the agency also announced the closure of the road after the first landslide rocked the area.
In a notice, the agency informed road users to exercise caution while plying the route.
At that point, the agency advised motorists to use alternate routes.
KeNHA stated that its engineers were already on site to restore traffic flow and ensure the safety of the motorists.
Late into the night, the agency announced that traffic flow had been restored.
“The KeNHA team is, however, still on the ground working on clearing the remaining soil material from the shoulders and verges of the Road. Motorists are urged to exercise lane discipline, and be courteous to other road users as they approach this section of the Road,” the agency said in a statement.
This came even as the meteorological department on November 1, 2023, announced that various parts of the country will experience heavy rains over the next week.
Residents in all 47 counties were further advised to be on the lookout for potential floods.
"Heavy rainfall being experienced over the northeast, northwest, and central highlands is expected to intensify and spread to Nairobi, the southern lowlands, the western sector, and the coast on Thursday, 2nd November," read part of the Met notice.
