Kenyan Working in Tanzania Among 11 Killed at Factory

A Kenyan who was working at a sugar factory in Morogoro, Tanzania was confirmed dead on Thursday, May 23.

According to police officers in Tanzania, the deceased was among 11 who were killed after a reported explosion in the factory caused by an electrical fault.

Police further revealed that the deceased who were working as electrical and machine technicians were in the control room in the wee hours of Thursday morning before the incident occurred.

"We have confirmed that one Kenyan, an Indian citizen, and one Brazilian have died in the incident that happened early morning on May 23, 1.30 am," Alex Mkama the Morogoro Police Regional Commander told the press.

Mkama explained that the explosion was caused by the high temperatures required to process sugar.

On the other hand, Shaban Marugujo the Morogoro Regional Fire and Rescue Commander also informed the press that a rescue team had been dispatched to the area to rescue and offer first aid to the victims.

"We will release an official report once the investigations are complete," he told Mwananchi newspaper.

One of the electricians at the company told Xinhua News that the team was testing one of the newly fixed heating systems for sugar production before the day started. However, a pipe that releases steam into a boiler busted.

The electrician was one of those who escaped unhurt because he had left the control room to answer a phone call when the explosion occurred.

He revealed that the new heating system was scheduled to start operations on Friday and the team was conducting several tests.

Following the accident, the bodies of the deceased were moved to the mortuary at the factory's hospital for preservation.

Additionally, two others who had sustained injuries were rushed to the hospital and are receiving treatment at the Bwagala Mission Hospital in Turiani Ward.
