Fire Breaks Out at Mavoko Law Court's Case Storage Facility

Fire broke out on Friday at the Mavoko Law Courts in Machakos County burning uncountable documents at the court’s files archive.

According to a statement sent to newsrooms by the Judiciary, the fire broke out in a metal container that stores closed cases at around 4 am Friday, May, 24.

The fire damaged archived files, some ICT equipment, floors, and walls, but did not affect any active case files.

The incident was reported at the Athi River Police Station.

The fire department is said to have promptly extinguished the fire by 5 am and police officers and judicial staff cordoned off the area.

“The fire damaged archived files, some ICT equipment, floors, and walls, but did not affect any active case files,” the Judiciary said in the statement.

The Judiciary stated that investigations were underway to determine the cause of the fire and to implement preventive measures.

Mavoko Law Courts is known for handling notable cases in the country. In November 2023, the court denied bond to a 68-year-old convicted American paedophile Terry Krieger.

The case was mentioned before Mavoko Senior Principal Magistrate Barbra Ojoo.
