Kilifi Governor Gideon Mung’aro on Friday imposed a ban on Muguka including its transportation, distribution, and sale.

In a statement, the governor ordered the immediate closure of all outlets, whether in the form of retail or wholesale, selling or distributing Muguka within Kilifi County.

Mung’aro further stated that vehicles transporting Muguka would not be allowed entry into Kilifi County.

“Executive Order No. 1 of 2024 on the ban of entry, transportation, distribution, sale, and use of Muguka within Killifi County. In the exercise of the powers conferred in Section 30(2)(1) of the County Government Act and all other enabling laws of Kenya,” the governor announced.

Following the decision to ban Muguka county departments and their agencies were directed to enforce the order and ensure compliance with the orders.

"In light of the above order, I therefore, with immediate effect, issue a directive to all the Kilifi County enforcement officers through the Directorate of Enforcement to ensure the order is enforced in totality," the governor directed.

"Any officer found colluding with culprits will face the law and all the disciplinary actions there are," he added.

The decision by Mung'aro comes barely a day after Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sheriff Nassir announced a total ban on the product.

In the May 22 notice, Nassir directed all outlets including retail and wholesale selling Muguka in Mombasa County to halt operations immediately.

The governor directed County Departments mandated with the role of law enforcement to arrest those who would contravene the directive.

"Now, therefore I Abdulswamad Sharrif Nassir, Governor of Mombasa, by the authority vested in me by the Constitution and existing laws, do hereby order and direct that, there be a total prohibition on the entry, transportation, distribution, sale and use of muguka and its products within Mombasa County," the Governor declared.

"Those who were dealing with this have refused and for that reason, I have consulted legally and it is found to be in order. I've signed an executive order to ban the entry and sale of muguka in Mombasa."
