Kenya Meteorological Department Issues Heavy Rainfall Advisory

The Kenya Meteorological Department on Saturday warned Kenyans in select regions to brace for heavy rains for the next five days.

In its forecast, the weather department stated that several regions of the country would receive rains in both heavy and moderate amounts.

Among the regions set to receive heavy rains include the Lake Victoria Basin, the Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley, regions of Nairobi, and the Rift Valley.

The counties in these regions include Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka and Nairobi.

Other counties in the mentioned regions are Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, and Elgeyo-Marakwet.

Counties of Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia and West Pokot were also predicted to receive rainfall.

The above regions are expected to experience heavy downpours accompanied by thunderstorms in the afternoon.

Kenyans living in the five regions were urged to be on the lookout for potential floods that could cause destruction and even lead to deaths.

According to Kenya Met, parts of the coastal region are also expected to receive rainfall in moderate amounts.

Similarly, the southeastern lowlands of Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta Counties are expected to experience light showers in the coming week.

Meanwhile, the North-western regions of Turkana and Samburu Counties would experience sunny conditions throughout the week.

Other counties set to experience sunny conditions for the next five days include Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo. 

Strong southerly and south-easterly winds of over 25 knots (12.5m/s) are expected in the Eastern half of the country and the Northwestern region respectively. 

Additionally, night temperatures in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley region including Nairobi County are expected to drop to 9°C while daytime temperatures to reach 30°C.

Daytime temperatures in the Northeastern counties of Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Isiolo are expected to hit 37°C.
