Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations have arrested six suspects, including four police officers.

The six are alleged to have followed the accountant of a private school in Nairobi from a bank in Utawala on Monday, June 3, broke into his car and disappeared with KSh2.2 million

“The six, three of whom are a police sergeant, a corporal and a constable from Kasarani Police Station, a police constable from Ruai police station and two civilians were arrested at the Kasarani Police Station public parking yard, by a combined team of sleuths from DCI Nairobi region and Kayole sub-county,” DCI said in a statement.

In a report that was filed at the Mihango Police Station, the money was intended to pay casual workers at the school located in Utawala.

The statement further explained that Ksh473,000 believed to be part of the stolen amount, was recovered from the six, who were ambushed inside the station's official police vehicle.

The six are said to have followed the accountant from when he parked his car outside the bank to when he left with the wads of cash.

The accountant had then parked his car outside the school, taken some amount from the withdrawn sum, locked the car, and entered the school compound.

When he went back to pick up more cash, he found the car broken into and the money missing.

DCI officers from the Nairobi region and those from the Kayole area are camping in Utawala after gathering information about one more suspect identified from CCTV footage.

The crime busters learnt that the suspect had been picked up moments earlier by unknown people driving in a Subaru car.

“Further intelligence led the team to the Kasarani station, where the six were ambushed in a GK vehicle and forced to identify themselves in the presence of the Sub-County Police Commander, his deputy and the Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer,” DCI said.

“The DCI sub-county head confirmed that the arrested officers were neither on official duty to Utawala nor working under his instructions,” the statement said.

The officers ransacked the car and recovered Ksh350,000 and another Ksh123,000 was retrieved from their pockets.

Two motor vehicles, one belonging to the Ruai officer and another belonging to the 5th suspect (Magwaga) which were parked in the yard, were detained.

The suspects are in police custody, waiting to be arraigned after investigations are completed.
