Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja on Wednesday revealed that the county was establishing new regulations for motorbike riders operating in the city.

The new regulations will require boda boda operators within the CBD to have a branded reflector jacket with the name of their Sacco  printed on the jacket.

Additionally, the operators will have, an individual personal identification number that will allow for easy identification of legitimate members.

These resolutions were arrived at during a meeting between boda boda sacco operators and Nairobi County's Security and Compliance Chief Officer Tony Kimani at the Green Park Terminus on Wednesday.

“The meeting resolved to have all CBD bodaboda operators to have branded reflectors according to the sacco's name, an individual personal number for easy identification of legitimate members amongst riders, security marshal and motorbike users,” read the statement in part.

Further, the county encouraged more boda boda riders to make good use of opportunities presented by companies to generate extra income, especially by marketing products and services by wearing reflectors of the companies.

Additionally, the county official revealed that the boda sacco operators supported the county government’s idea of having them pay revenues to the county

“As they welcomed the idea of paying revenue to the county and cooperating with compliance officers the bodaboda saccos present expressed gratitude to the leadership of Governor Sakaja, for the goodwill given to them to operate within CBD and promise readiness to cooperate with City authority to ensure smooth running of the business,” stated Sakaja.

These new regulations have been fronted after the National Transport Safety Authority (NTSA) proposed to introduce a graduated licensing system for motorcycles.

NTSA also proposed introducing anti-lock braking systems and set acceptable safety standards for helmets and hazard warning signs for motorbike riders.

Additionally, NTSA explored the possibility of establishing and operationalising a motorcycle helmet laboratory testing to ensure compliance with traffic rules.
