Kiambu Senator Karungo Wa Thang’wa has fronted a proposal to the Senate to move a motion on the establishment of an ad-hoc committee which will discuss the issues of Gen Z.
In a letter dated June 25 and seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the senator has proposed to move the motion that will establish the committee that will debate on the way forward following the raging protests that have rocked the country.
According to the letter, Thang’wa seeks to bring attention to the Senate, on matters of Gen Z protests which are currently considered a matter of national interest.
“I write to bring to your attention a matter of national importance requiring the Senate's urgent consideration. Our nation is currently experiencing widespread demonstrations and picketing, primarily involving young citizens categorized as 'Generation Z',” read the letter in part.
The committee once established will seek to investigate the circumstances leading to the widespread demonstrations.
They will also seek to examine the emerging generational shifts, challenges, fears, and expectations to inform appropriate policy interventions for the Gen-Z demographic.
Further, the Senate is expected to audit the legal and legislative framework for youth empowerment and involvement in governance and management of state affairs.
The Ad-Hoc Committee if established will also develop policy and legislative proposals on youth empowerment and involvement in governance and management of state affairs.
Thangwa’ within the proposed motion also stated that the committee would come up with other recommendations that will address the concerns raised.
Additionally, the Senate is expected to adopt recommendations that would prevent potential exploitation of the prevailing discontent for extreme indoctrination or radicalization of the young generation.
According to the proposal, the committee would operate within a specified timeframe to ensure focused and timely action.
The proposed motion comes after massive numbers of protestors turned up in Nairobi to push the government to reject the 2024 Finance Bill.
