Uproar as Autopsy Confirms Student Died of Teargas Inhalation

The Muslims for Human Rights (MUHURI) on Monday raised concerns after an autopsy report confirmed that a 20-year old student died from teargas inhalation.

MUHURI  in a statement revealed that the autopsy conducted on Tuesday confirmed that the 20-year-old student succumbed to the effects of the teargas lobbed by police during the protests.  

“A postmortem conducted today, witnessed by representatives from MUHURI, Independent Policing Oversight Authority, HakiAfrica, IMLU_org, and Emmanuel's family, confirmed that tear gas inhalation was the cause of death," read MUHURI’s statement.

Following the autopsy report, the human rights group called for a serious reevaluation of crowd control tactics employed by law enforcement.

The organisation reported that tear gas, while intended to disperse crowds, can have deadly consequences.

MUHURI, additionally pledged to have the matter investigated further by all the relevant authorities.

Emannuel Tata, passed on last Tuesday, in Mwembe Tayari, Mombasa after he was caught up in running battles between protestors and the police.

According to family reports the 20-year-old was headed home in the company of his friends when he was caught up in the cross-fire.

He was a  Laboratory Technology student studying in Meru.

Emmanuel's funeral will be held on Friday at his home in Athi River, Machakos County.  

Before Emmanuel’s death, thousands of young protesters had marched through Mombasa against the Finance Bill 2024. At least 15 people were injured during clashes between police and protesters.

Four police officers were also injured during the chaos.
