Athletics Kenya on Tuesday, July 2, announced the postponement of the 2024 Nairobi City Marathon that was scheduled for Sunday, July 7.
While addressing the press, President of the Athletics Kenya, Jackson Tuwei stated the event had been postponed to September 8, attributing the decision to unavoidable circumstances beyond the agency's control.
Despite the postponement, Interested participants were urged to use the extended period to continue registering and train for the sporting event.
“After widespread consultations, evaluation and introspection, the Nairobi City Marathon, earlier scheduled for this Sunday, July 7, 2024, has been postponed to September 8, 2024,” noted Jackson Tuwei.
"The postponement has been occasioned by unavoidable, external circumstances beyond the control of the organizing committee," he added.
According to Tuwei, the postponement will provide the institution with the opportunity to put in place measures to ensure a bigger and better edition than the previous ones.
Tuwei also went ahead to commend foreign athletes who had already registered for the upcoming event and urged them to exercise patience until the the event kicks off.
"We believe that the entry of these foreign athletes will go a long way in spicing up the competition and enhance Nairobi City Marathon's status as one of the world's most-watched road races," the President of Athletics Kenya stated.
"Let us continue with the same fervour for the sport and work together towards a glorious event as the countdown to September 8 officially begins now."
The latest announcement by Athletics Kenya comes amidst the ongoing anti-government protests across the country.
Recently, President William Ruto also cancelled his attendance at the opening ceremony of the Global Peace Leadership Conference that was to be held at Upper Hill in Nairobi.
The cancellation of the Head of State's attendance was attributed to the countrywide protests, which rocked Nairobi.
