Kenyan Secures Top Role in Global Sports Governing Body

Lt. (Rtd) Gen. Jackson Tuwei has secured the World Athletics Vice-President position  in the recently concluded elections at the 54th World Athletics Congress held in Budapest, Hungary. 

His victory was officially disclosed on Thursday, August 17, by Athletics Kenya, the governing body overseeing both track and field events in Kenya.

Tuwei clinched a total of 104 votes, while former Colombian sprinter Ximena Restrepo representing South America obtained 154 votes, securing her own place as Vice President.

Sebastian Coe has successfully retained his Presidency of World Athletics, after running unopposed in the elections.

General Jackson Tuwei will now be a part of the Executive Board and other bodies within World Athletics, all of which are answerable to Congress and obligated to provide annual reports to it.

Tuwei, concurrently holding the position of Confederation of Africa Athletics (CAA) Senior Vice President, has achieved the distinction of becoming the first Kenyan to assume the vice presidency role within the global athletics governing body.

The World Athletics Congress comprises the representation of the 214 Member Federations, each being represented by up to three delegates.

Serving as the ultimate authority of World Athletics and the sport of athletics worldwide, the World Athletics Congress holds the highest stature.

Who is Lt (Rtd) Gen.Jackson Tuwei

General Jackson Tuwei, a distinguished military officer, retired in 2010 after an illustrious 39-year tenure of service. 

His career has encompassed numerous national and international training courses, imparting upon him the essential military and leadership skills.

During his career, he has held the role of Senior Vice-President of CAA for a period of 4 years. Additionally, he held the positions of President of Eastern Africa Athletics Region for 4 years and President of Athletics Kenya for a span of 8 years.

General Tuwei also orchestrated the successful organisation of the African Championships. He has also conducted comprehensive training for CAA members in Sports for Climate and Air Quality Actions. 

His leadership extends to the orchestration of a plethora of regional and national events, solidifying his influential role within the sporting domain.
