Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Wednesday pleaded with the Kenyan youth to call off protests, after which the national government will deal decisively with goons who have been infiltrating the recent demonstrations to cause chaos.

Speaking in Laikipia during the funeral ceremony for his late sister Leah Wangari, the Deputy President appealed to the youth to give dialogue a chance especially since President William Ruto had listened to the concerns raised by Kenyans across the country which will be subsequently addressed.

"Now that you have been heard, a mechanism is being worked on on how the issues that you think need to be addressed will be addressed," Gachagua stated.

"Once you call off the protests, then our security agencies will be in a position to deal firmly and decisively with criminals," he added.

Gachagua further noted that the Kenyan Gen-Z had started a notable initiative by showing interest in proper governance.

The Deputy President's rallying call falls on the backdrop of the protests witnessed in different parts of the country on Tuesday.

The protests, which occurred across various towns in the country were marred with violence and destruction of property as goons took advantage to loot and vandalise property.

In Mombasa, an incident involving a civilian firearm holder descended into chaos after he shot 2 Kenyans.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki would later vow that the government will deal decisively with Kenyans taking advantage of the protests to loot and cause anarchy.

Gachagua Political Waters

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua finds himself in a tricky political situation with speculation swirling that all is not well between himself and President William Ruto.

Speaking during a roundtable interview with journalists at State House, Nairobi on Sunday, President William Ruto dismissed the speculation and comments made by the second in command that the country was being hampered by a dysfunctional National Intelligence Service (NIS).

Gachagua, last week demanded that NIS Director General Noordin Haji resign for failing to properly advise President Ruto on the public's mood on the Finance Bill, 2024 before MPs attempted to push it through.
