Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Wednesday launched a manhunt for goons who broke into Bondo Police Station.
In a statement, DCI noted that the incident occurred on Tuesday, July 2, during the countrywide protests that turned chaotic in some parts.
In Bondo, the goons were reportedly armed with crude weapons including stones and catapults, slings, petrol bombs, and other concealed weapons.
During the attack, several police officers sustained injuries, and property of unknown value was destroyed.
"Already, one of the suspects captured in a phone recording attacking a police officer and leaving him sprawled on the tarmac before robbing him of his anti-riot gun (launcher) has been arrested and the gun recovered, as a pursuit for his accomplices who have since been identified heightens," read the statement in part.
DCI indicated that the police officer was saved by members of the public and rushed to Bondo Hospital where he is undergoing treatment while in critical condition.
Other officers who sustained injuries were treated and discharged.
Yesterday during the anti-Finance Bill 2024 protests, several business traders across the country complained of losses after criminals broke into their establishments and stole inventory.
Supermarkets and other stalls in Nairobi CBD were wiped clean while vehicles in Mombasa and a car yard were torched.
DCI, while using CCTV footage and video clips, published the identities of individuals recorded breaking into shops and businesses.
The authorities also deployed scrupulous investigators across the affected regions to pursue suspects.
Within 48 hours, the sleuths revealed that 204 suspects who were found engaging in criminal activities in the guise of protesting were apprehended.
Of the 204 apprehended, 35 were from the Coastal region, 18 were in Nyanza, and 11 and 4 were in Rift Valley and Eastern regions respectively.
"The DCI reminds culprits that they shall bear the consequences of their actions individually in the corridors of justice," read part of the statement.
