At least four people lost their lives on Saturday night July 6 after an accident involving three vehicles occurred along the Nairobi-Murang'a highway.

According to eyewitnesses who spoke to the press, a speeding personal car hit another car before veering off the road. The second vehicle rolled over to the next lane and hit a bus which was cruising at high speed.

The driver of the first vehicle was believed to be intoxicated leading to the accident that left four dead and others injured.

One of the residents from the Kabati area lamented that the accident scene had become a black spot. Several accidents had been reported in the past claiming multiple lives and necessitating intervention.

The eyewitness identified as Joseph Mburu added that he rushed to the scene after the accident. He was among the residents asking other motorists to stop and help rush the injured passengers to the hospital.

"We forcefully stopped some motorists who declined to stop and help carry some victims to the hospital. We used stones to block the road and we managed to get five victims in different vehicles," he added.

Another eyewitness disclosed that the passengers in the different vehicles were in critical condition as they were being rushed to hospital.

Meanwhile, the bus driver who also spoke to the press explained that although he managed to veer away, the Public Service Vehicle (PSV) still got damaged. He added that if the passengers did not have their seat belts on, it is likely that a more serious situation would have been reported.

He remarked that what caused the accident was not a lack of speed bumps but the mistake of one or two drivers.

Speaking to journalists, Mathiu Kaingi, the Murang'a Police Commander confirmed that the accident involved three cars adding that investigations into the matter had been launched.

He revealed that police had also launched a manhunt for the first vehicle driver who fled the scene after the accident.

Kaingi called upon drivers to adhere to all traffic rules to avoid such accidents in the future. He added that some drivers had been arrested for breaking traffic laws and driving recklessly.

"I urge all road users and residents to respect and obey traffic laws because by driving recklessly you are putting the lives of others at risk," he remarked.

Following the accident, the bodies were transferred to a local morgue while those with injuries were being treated at a health facility in Thika, Kiambu County. The damaged vehicles were towed to the Kabati Police Station.
