Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Junior has employed over 450 Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) teachers on permanent terms.
The governor explained that the move is set to revolutionize the education landscape in the county, ensuring job security and better remuneration for educators.
"In January this year, we began this journey to convert a cohort of 497 Early Childhood Development and Education program (ECDE) teachers. I promised you that the rest of you will have a day in the sun. Today is your day. This is the day that the Lord has made for you," Governor Kilonzo said during the announcement amid cheers from the teachers present, learners and other stakeholders.
He emphasized that this conversion is not just a political gesture but a heartfelt recognition of the teachers' dedication and hard work.
The Governor expressed his apologies for the delays in making this transition.
"The conversion is not just a usual political event, this is a heartfelt recognition of your work, it is also a way for me as a leader of this county to say sorry for taking too long," he added.
The county boss explained the importance of treating teachers well at both the county and national levels, recognizing their crucial role in preserving the future of the country.
Elizabeth Muli, the County Executive Committee (CEC) for Education and ICT, underscored the significant impact of this decision on the county's educational system.
"These teachers take care of over 35,000 ECDE learners across the county. They are building a generation. This will lead to a significant impact on our children's learning experience," she stated.
Dr. Nicodemus Muteti, the chairman of the Makueni Employment Board, outlined the operational changes accompanying the permanent employment terms.
"Going forward, as teachers who belong to a scheme, you must not only serve in your ward but you're also eligible to be transferred from one centre to another and may now serve at any part of Makueni like any other officer," Dr. Muteti explained.
In this second phase of transitioning to the permanent and pensionable terms for the ECDE teachers, the new employment terms come with improved salaries.
According to a report from the county, teachers with a diploma will now receive Ksh41,750, while those with a certificate will be paid Ksh37,500. Previously, they earned Ksh20,000 and Ksh17,000 respectively.
This significant increase in remuneration reflects the county's commitment to valuing and supporting its educators.
This initiative is expected to enhance the quality of early childhood education in Makueni, benefiting thousands of young learners and setting a precedent for other counties to follow.
Stakeholders said the employment of ECDE teachers on permanent terms is not only a win for the teachers but also a crucial step towards improving the overall education system in the region.
In the Financial Year 2023/24, the county collected Ksh1.058 billion as of 30th June 2024. This is a notable achievement for the county since 2013.
"This has been made possible by the commitment of the business community to willingly pay fees and charges. We would like to thank each for their contribution to this success," Mutua said in a thank-you note to Makueni residents.
