Kenyan truck drivers have issued a strike notice following reports of brutal attacks meted on some of their colleagues at the Kenya- South Sudan border point.
The Kenya truckers have been calling for diplomatic talks between the two governments to avert the mounting fatalities witnessed in the Kenya- South Sudan link roads in recent times.
Peter Tonui, the Chair of the Truck Drivers Association (TDA) threatened to lead his members in storming the streets and protest in the unlikely event the government would not intervene to ensure the safety of long-distance truck drivers along the Kenya-South Sudan border.
"The main problem we are experiencing at the border is uncalled for. Our drivers are killed in Sudan but no action is being taken."
He urged the Cabinet Secretary of Foreign Affairs Musalia Mudavadi to take necessary action and see to it that the issue is resolved, failure to which, the drivers will picket and present their petitions and pleas to the relevant authorities.
The truckers allege that 11 drivers had so far been killed over a period they did not immediately specify. As such, they had resorted to looking for alternative routes to reach their destinations.
They added that insecurity has rocked the South Sudan border and its environs posing threats to not only the lives of truck drivers but also the lives of residents living within the borders.
The alarm now paves the way for an urgent engagement of security agencies of the two countries to ensure the safety of travelers, truck drivers, and residents of the affected areas.
In July 2023, Kenyan political leaders and security agencies convened urgent talks with their South Sudan counterparts to address border tension pitting communities along the common boundary.
This is after brewing tension witnessed along Nadapal Kenya-South Sudan border after a shooting incident targeted a vehicle accessing the border point.
Two people, among them a local and a driver were reportedly shot dead by unknown gunmen in separate incidents along the border point.
The talks between the two parties resolved to implement a raft of measures that would avert insecurity in the region to quell border tension.
