The government is in the process of collecting farmers' data to create a national database that will maintain records of farmers in a new program.

According to Deputy Government Spokesperson Mwanaisha Chidzuga, the government had created the database and successfully onboarded more than 4 million farmers.

The database will be used for gathering information on the identity of the farmers through the creation of profiles.

Within the profiles, farmers’ data on the location of their farms and crop acreage will be recorded.

Further, the government will also record data on the needs of farmers such as fertiliser needs.

According to the government, the data is also expected to help the government to initiate data-informed projects such as subsidy projects.

“The data will inform targeted interventions like subsidies to boost productivity and profitability hence ensuring food security," stated Chidzuga.

This plan comes after the government received Ksh650 million from the Swedish government in 2023 to advance the project.

The funding enabled the government to enter the second phase of enhancing the Kenya Integrated Agriculture Management Information System (KIAMIS).

KIAMIS is expected to be crucial in the implementation of the Agriculture Transformation and Growth Strategy (ASTGS), 2019 – 2029.

The continued implementation of the project is expected to be implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

Additionally, the government plans to push the initiative through the National Administration of Chiefs and Assistant Chiefs in all regions.
