Kenya is among the latest countries that have been affected by the ongoing global IT outage.

Similar to other countries such as the US and Australia, the outage has posed system challenges for a number of airlines in the country.

Following the outage, Kenyans were unable to access the online booking system for most airlines.

This forced the airlines to advise their customers to opt for the manual booking system.

"We are experiencing a major system outage across all our stations and website due to a global system downtime. Please bear with us as we serve you through manual processes, which may delay our services. Our teams are working to rectify the issue, and we will share an update once this is resolved.

"We apologize for the inconvenience caused and thank you for your patience," read the statement in part.

Cause of Outage

Preliminary investigations have attributed the IT outage to an update done by cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike.

The update is reported to have affected businesses and institutions that use the Windows system.

"CrowdStrike is actively working with customers impacted by a defect found in a single content update for Windows hosts. Mac and Linux hosts are not impacted. This is not a security incident or cyberattack. The issue has been identified, isolated and a fix has been deployed.

"We refer customers to the support portal for the latest updates and will continue to provide complete and continuous updates on our website. We further recommend organizations ensure they’re communicating with CrowdStrike representatives through official channels. Our team is fully mobilised to ensure the security and stability of CrowdStrike customers," CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz stated.

The latest update led to system outages for most airlines and banks across the world.

In most countries, authorities were forced to suspend flights had train services.

Bank services were also affected by the IT outage as online services were unavailable.  So far, no bank has reported a system failure in Kenya.
