The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) on Friday issued a 7-day strike notice as they demand the government fulfil the promises it made to teachers.
Whale addressing the press, Secretary General Akelo Misori called for the immediate disbursement of all the funds including those meant for the teachers' medical scheme.
Misori also called on President William Ruto's administration to fulfil the 2022-2023 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) reached previously.
The KUPPET leader further accused the government of careless expenditure and urged the government to cut its spending and use the money to pay the teachers.
According to the teachers' union, the decision by President Ruto to withdraw the Finance Bill would immensely affect the operations of the sector.
“KUPPET rejects the advancement being perpetuated through the media to the effect that these projects have been affected by the withdrawal of Finance Bill 2024," Misori stated.
"The government’s goal should be the removal of wastage in its operations not the withdrawal of benefits to workers."
The government was urged to particularly cut down on the salaries of the Members of Parliament and utilize the money to fund the education sector.
"At this particular time, you realise MPs running away from public wrath saying they don't want a salary increase yet their salaries plus allowances totalling nearly 1.5 million," KUPPET leaders argued.
"Yet the teacher who is in charge of our education just earns a driver’s salary of our MPs.”
The union further demanded that all 46,000 intern teachers be employed on a permanent and pensionable basis by the start of next month.
According to KUPPET, the intern teachers should receive their confirmation letters and their July salaries disbursed by next week.
