Minority Whip in the National Assembly Junet Mohammed has sent a warning to the partial Cabinet Secretary nominees that were appointed by President William Ruto.
Speaking on Tuesday on the floor of the National Assembly, Junet, who is one of the vetting committee members, hinted at a thorough vetting that awaits the CS nominees.
"I want to tell members that this is not going to be a business as usual, if somebody is not suitable, capable, or does not have the capacity, we are going to throw him out."
The Suna East Member of Parliament noted that the committee had vowed to see to it that thorough scrutiny and vetting is done to the nominees in honor of the youths who stormed the streets to protest and push for government reforms and restructuring.
While giving a hint to some of the considerations, the MP said that they will take note of every nominee's net worth, insinuating that they will also disapprove of anyone whose net worth record will not be commensurate with the monthly salary.
The responsibility of approving or disapproving the CS nominees lies in the hands of the vetting committee of the National Assembly after President Ruto appointed the first batch of the Cabinet Secretaries.
On July 19, 2024, the head of state appointed 10 CSs and the Attorney General for his government.
The nomination came weeks after the President sacked his entire cabinet save from Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi.
In the list, Kithure Kindiki was nominated to head the Ministry of the Interior and National Administration, Debra Mulungu was to lead the Ministry of Health, and Aden Duale for the Ministry of Defence.
The President nominated Rebecca Miano as the Attorney General.
Additionally, Davis Chirchir was named the head of the Ministry of Roads and Transport while Soipan Tuya was to head the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry.
Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation was to be led by Eric Muga and Julius Migosi given responsibility in the Ministry of Education.
In a quick turn of events on the floor of the National Assembly, on Tuesday, Speaker Moses Wetang'ula announced through a submission to Parliament in an unexpected reshuffle.
Duale, who has been the Defence CS, would oversee environmental and climate issues, a role that Ruto has been keen on since taking power in 2022. Meanwhile, Tuya, previously in the Ministry of Environment, stepped into the defence role.
