The National Police Service has accused hired goons of instigating chaos during protests in various parts of Nairobi on July 23.
The demonstrations, which attracted a low turnout, saw incidents of looting and property destruction, particularly in the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD) and surrounding areas.
In a statement released by the acting Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, the security forces had anticipated the demonstrations and deployed adequate personnel at critical installations, including the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, to ensure security.
This proactive measure, coupled with cooperation from the public, was largely successful in maintaining order across the city.
However, skirmishes were reported in several areas including Kimathi Street, Archives, North Airport Road, Pipeline area, Roysambu, and as far as Kakamega Town.
According to the press release, preliminary investigations suggest that individuals, disguised as protestors, were hired specifically to incite violence and disrupt peace in these localities.
"We have reason to believe that some goons, posing as demonstrators, were brought in from outside to cause chaos in the affected areas," the Inspector General's statement noted.
"These elements were responsible for the looting and property destruction that was witnessed."
The police assured the public that investigations into the incidents are ongoing and promised a swift and thorough inquiry.
"Those found culpable will face the full force of the law," the statement concluded, reinforcing the commitment to hold those responsible accountable for their actions.
The statement from the National Police Service came hours after Kenyans accused police officers of meting violence to residents in the outskirts of Nairobi.
