The government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on Saturday expressed its regret following a recent road accident in Kajiado County that left three Chinese tourists dead.
In a statement, Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’Oei revealed the accident similarly left several other tourists who were also of Chinese descent nursing critical injuries.
According to Sing'Oei, those injured were rushed to the Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi where the victims underwent treatment and were still recuperating.
“Deeply saddened by the death of three Chinese tourists as a result of a road accident in Kajiado this week,” PS Korir Sing’Oei said while expressing his regret over the incident.
Following the incident, China’s ambassador to Kenya Zhou Pingjian, paid a visit to those injured. The ambassador was in the company of PS Sing'Oei and Kenya's Director of Foreign Affairs, Jane Makori.
“I visited those injured who are undergoing treatment at Nairobi Aga Khan Hospital,” Sing’Oei revealed.
Korir assured the Chinese community in Kenya of the government's commitment to the safety of all tourists who visit the country.
While revealing details of the accident earlier this week, Police Spokesperson Resila Onyango said the trio tragically lost their lives after the van they were travelling in overturned on the Oloitoktok-Emali Road.
She further revealed the vehicle which was en route to Nairobi from Amboseli National Park, was carrying six Chinese tourists at the time of the accident.
According to Resila, the deaths of the three were confirmed at the Kilome Nursing and Maternity Hospital in Emali, where all the victims had been taken before others were transferred to the Aga Khan Hospital.
In an analogous situation on March 11, last year, two tourists of German and Swiss descent died during a Safari at Maasai Mara after their tour vehicle veered off the road and rolled several times.
A police report revealed the vehicle had five occupants at the time of the accident including three Germans and two Swiss nationals.
The report disclosed that one German national was killed on the spot while the Swiss later succumbed to his injuries.
