A suspect and his accomplice were on Monday, August 5, arrested for attempting to bribe Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers inside the headquarters.
In a statement, DCI indicated that the duo were caught red-handed trying to grease the palms of the officers to secure the release of human trafficking victims currently held at Isinya Police Station in Kajiado County.
The incident took place at DCI headquarters in Nairobi where the two walked in with Ksh50,000 cash.
They intended to bribe officers from the Transnational Organized Crime Unit to secure the release of the victims behind bars.
Upon their arrest, the suspects were escorted to Muthaiga Police Station for further questioning while the money was seized as an exhibit.
The DCI believes the two are part of a well-organised human trafficking clique operating in Kajiado County.
The two are held in custody awaiting to be arraigned in court for the attempted bribery.
Separately, Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) detectives arrested a police officer on allegations that she solicited a Ksh100,000 bribe.
In the incident, which occurred earlier in the week, the OCS was accused of demanding the bribe and in exchange, facilitating the release of the complainants’ motor vehicle.
"The OCS was apprehended after the complainants, a man, and his wife, made a telephone call to EACC for help when the bribe demand persisted with the OCS threatening to put them in cells for insisting on the release of their car without the demanded amount," EACC said.
"Upon arrest, the OCS was escorted to EACC Central Regional Office in Nyeri where she was processed and later released on cash bail."
Late last year, two renowned serial land fraudsters believed to be part of a dreaded well-organized land-grabbing cartel that operated in Nairobi were arrested trying to bribe DCI officers.
The two, who targeted white elderly people, were arrested at the DCI's Mazingira Complex premises.
