In its war against drug trafficking, Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) apprehended several criminals among them a driver who was intercepted in while attempting to escape police net.

DCI officers from the office of the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) and the Transnational Organised Crime Unit (TOCU) intercepted the vehicle at a roadblock mounted along the Mai Mahiu-Nairobi on Sunday.

The driver, however, evaded the police resulting into a car chase along the highway. The driver was however nabbed after his car got stuck in a ditch. A search of the vehicle uncovered 19 packages of cannabis.

Separately, three other cases of drug trafficking were seized. Along Migori-Sirare Highway, a motorcycle rider carrying two bags of marijuana weighing 73.6 kilograms and valued at approximately Ksh2 million managed to escape but DCI officers got hold of the contraband. Efforts are ongoing to locate him.

Another 20-year-old man was arrested in possession of 350 rolls of Bhang weighing 22 kilograms along the Nambale-Busia road.

In Busia, a 29-year old man was arrested while she was trying to board a bus headed to Nairobi with contraband.

“A swift search of her brown bag revealed one bale of bhang wrapped in white cello tape, weighing 17.15 kilograms, with an estimated street value of Ksh514,500," DCI statement read in part.

All the suspects are set to be arraigned in court on Monday, August 26, while the seized drugs and vehicles will be used as exhibits.

This is, however, not the first time police are arresting suspects of drug trafficking and nabbing narcotics. In March, at least seven foreigners were deported over cases of drug trafficking and possession.

According to the police and the immigration officers, the suspects were deported between March 18 and 21 in an operation staged within estates in Nairobi.

In May, DCI officers arrested two foreigners and a Kenyan suspected of drug trafficking. The three were arrested during a raid in their Kasarani hideout where DCI officers confiscated cocaine, heroin and methamphetamine.

DCI has vowed its continued commitment to counter narcotics trafficking. The general public has also been urged to be vigilant and steer clear of this illicit trade.
