104 People Killed Over Witchcraft Allegations Last Year

104 elderly people were killed in Kilifi county last year alone over allegations of practicing witchcraft.

This is according to County Commissioner Joseph Keter who reveals that most of the victims were killed by family members.

Even more disturbing is the fact that the figure given is made up of only reported murders and hence could be higher as the inhumane practice spreads across the county.

According to The Standard, Ganze sub-county has recorded the highest number of aged persons who were brutally murdered with 30 cases being reported while Chonyi sub-county came second with 11 cases.

The perpetrators of the homicides are hardly brought to justice as the families of the victims more often than not refuse to cooperate with police as they investigate the cases.

Reports indicate that some youth have joined in the practice of killing their elderly parents under the guise of having practiced witchcraft, so as to inherit property, especially coconut farms which make for the larger part of economic activities in the area.

Police have however have vowed to work with the nyumba kumi initiative to get information in a bid to stop the vice.
