Winners of the various events at the Nairobi City Marathon are set to pocket hefty cash rewards in both men and women's categories, the highest being Ksh3.5 million.
This year's edition of the marathon saw participants compete in four different races; the full marathon, the half marathon, the 10-kilometre expressway run and the six-kilometre fun run.
According to the Nairobi City Marathon official website, more than 14,000 people participated in various races with sizeable prize money on the cards for the winner of all the races except the fun run.
Before the official start of the races, the event's director Ibrahim Hussein was adamant that the Nairobi City Marathon was keen to conform to the World Athletics and Association of International Marathons and Distance Races rules.
The biggest prize money will go towards the winner of the full marathon (42 kilometres), as those who finish first place in both the men and women's categories will pocket KSh3.5 million. Runner-ups will get Ksh2.25 million, while the second runner-up wll get Ksh1.5 million.
At least 20 people participating in the full marathon will receive a cash reward, ranging from Ksh800,000 (fourth place) to Ksh30,000 (20th place).
In the half-marathon category, the winner in both the men and women's categories will receive Ksh150,000 with first and second runners-up set expected to receive Ksh80,000 and Ksh50,000 respectively.
Finally, the 10-kilometre Expressway run, which kicked off at 9 am, will see the winner get Ksh100,000 in both the men and women's categories.
The winners
By 9:30 am, winners of the various races had been confirmed.
In the men's category, Eliud Magut won the men's marathon with a time of 2:09:53. Josphat Bett finished as first runner-up. Cherotich Limo, on the other hand, won the women's marathon and was closely followed by Lillian Jebii.
Marion Kibor won the Nairobi City Marathon women's half marathon, with Gladys Chepkurui and Sharon Kiptugen finishing in second and third respectively.
In the 21km category, Robert Kiprop won the men's category while Wilson Kiprono and Timothy Kibet took second and third places respectively.
