The Ministry of Health on Tuesday announced the commencement of a workplace mental wellness program that will target all healthcare workers across the country.

The announcement followed the death of an intern doctor, Desree Moraa, who reportedly died by suicide after spending hours working at a medical facility in Gatundu.

While mourning Moraa, Health Cabinet Secretary Deborah Barasa stated that the move would be implemented jointly with the County Governments to ensure that support systems were strengthened so that those facing challenges do not feel lonely.

In her statement, the CS stated that the tragedy required a renewed commitment to addressing the growing mental health burden within the country.

Moraa, who worked as an intern at Gatundu Level 5 Hospital in Kiambu County, reportedly died on Sunday night. According to the police, her body was found dangling from the top of her bedroom balcony by her colleagues.

The police officers who visited the scene revealed that they found the deceased's body hanging on a tightrope and close to her was a note she had written stating the cause of her action.

Her colleagues, while commenting on the matter, attributed her death to her working conditions, with reports suggesting that Moraa worked for about 36 hours prior to her death.

Following her death, the deceased's body was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy. The area police officers have since launched a probe into the matter.

Meanwhile, Health CS Barasa expressed regret over the incident and pledged to realign working conditions for healthcare givers across the country.

The CS, while mourning Desree, termed her a dedicated healthcare professional who possessed much potential.

"On behalf of the Ministry of Health, I extend our deepest condolences to Dr. Moraa's family, friends, and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time," CS Barasa stated.

"As a medical intern, she had already touched so many lives with her compassion and commitment to the healthcare profession. Her passing is a stark reminder of the silent struggles that many, including those in the healthcare profession, often endure."
