Kenya Met Issues Weekend Heavy Rainfall Advisory for 7 Regions Including Nairobi

The Kenya Meteorological Department has cautioned Kenyans living in various parts of the country to brace for occasional rainfall from Friday, October 18 to Tuesday, October 22.

In its five-day weather forecast published on October 18, the weather department announced that rainfall was expected in the regions of Highlands East, the West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley and the North-western region of the country.

According to the advisory, the above regions would receive heavy rainfall over the next five days and the downpour would be accompanied by thunderstorms. 

Similarly, residents living in the regions of South-eastern lowlands and North-eastern Kenya were also urged to prepare for occasional rainfall but in moderate amounts over the weekend stretching to Tuesday evening.

Among the countries that were forecasted to experience heavy rains include Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo and Uasin Gishu. The weather department noted that the rains in these counties would be experienced particularly in the afternoon hours.

Other counties that were projected to experience heavy downpours are Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia and West Pokot. 

The highland East counties of Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka and Nairobi were also listed among areas to experience continuously heavy downpours for the next five days.

However, light showers were projected to occur in the Southeastern lowlands counties of Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado and Taita Taveta as well as inland parts of the Tana River.

Temperature Advisory

The meteorological department in its weekend advisory also cautioned residents living in the counties of Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka, and Nairobi to prepare for very cold nights. 

According to the weather department, the night temperatures in the above counties were expected to drop to 10°C in the first three days of the forecast before rising to 11°C for the rest of the forecast.

Similarly, residents living in Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega and Vihiga were cautioned to brace for high daytime temperatures of up to 35°C. 

Other counties that were cautioned to prepare for hot days include; Turkana, Samburu, Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, Taita Taveta, Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale.
