Isiolo Governor Abdi Guyo on Wednesday found himself on the receiving end of Senators' wrath who had become livid over his habit of ignoring summons totaling 7 skipped sessions.
In the most recent instance, the Governor was supposed to appear before the lawmakers on October 15, 2024 to respond to various issues about the governance of the devolved unit including pending bills.
Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale, a member of the Senate Committee on Finance and Budget warned the governor that his contempt and impunity towards the Senate could land him in serious political trouble.
The senator was referring to the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua which the lawmaker pointed out the Governor was risking.
"Do you appreciate the fact that this Senate holds your fate in its hands? The level of impunity that you have demonstrated towards the Senate will fall on you as a governor and a politician. Am sure you know of the events that took place in the last few days", Senator Khalwale warned.
The Senator went on to tell off the Governor for his leadership which most leaders from the devolved unit have blamed as the key reasons behind the stalling of numerous projects within the county. Khalwale challenged the Governor to subject himself to oversight and accountability.
"We will not allow you to treat Isiolo like a private property. If you must apologize, apologize and subject yourself to oversight and accountability," Khalwale stated during the Senate proceedings.
The Senator told the Governor to rise beyond his selfish interests insisting Isiolo does not deserve someone incompetent in leadership.
Besides members of the Senate Standing Committee on Finance and Budget taking turns bashing him, the Governor was also on Tuesday, October 22, hit with a hefty fine for snubbing summons.
"Isiolo County Governor Abdi Guyo has been fined Ksh 500,000 for failing to appear before the Senate Standing Committee on Finance and Budget," the Senate communicated in a formal statement.
Members of the Committee were displeased with the Governor’s failure to provide a coherent explanation and accused him of disrespecting both the Senate and the people of Isiolo.
The governor appeared before the Committee after Senate Speaker Amason Kingi directed the Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja to apprehend him and present the county chief before the house physically over the contempt the governor had shown the house.
