UPDATE: The second suspect in Wells Fargo HR manager Willis Ayieko’s murder, who escaped a police shootout on Wednesday night was gunned down in Kisumu City on Thursday.
Confirming the incident, Nyanza Regional Police Boss Patrick Tito stated the suspect had checked into a hotel near Kisumu Polytechnic Wednesday night before he was ambushed by the police.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Wednesday evening recovered a pistol belonging to the late Wells Fargo Human Resource Manager, Willis Ayieko.
Together with the police in Siaya, the security agency managed to trail two suspects who were reportedly in possession of the firearm.
The recovery was effected after a tip-off from members of the public who reported two suspicious individuals, one male and one female, spotted with a gun in a car at Wagai Trading Centre.
It was alleged that the firearm was robbed from the slain Ayieko on the night he was murdered on October 23 after he went missing on October 18. Ayieko's body was found dumped in the Mungowere stream in Siaya County where an autopsy report by the Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor revealed Ayieko died from head injuries.
Responding to the tip, officers from Wagai Police Station acted swiftly. Upon trying to flag down the suspect’s vehicle, the male driver defied the orders by the police and instead opened fire while speeding off towards Luanda.
This prompted a hot chase that ended at Adder Farm within the Kagilo area, where the vehicle lost control, veered off, and rolled over on the left side of the road.
Unfortunately, the driver managed to escape, leaving behind his female accomplice, who was found seriously injured and unconscious.
Upon searching the vehicle, the police recovered a pistol loaded with 11 rounds of ammunition, which was positively identified as the firearm robbed from Ayieko before his heinous killing.
The woman was rushed to the nearby hospital in Yala but fate was not on her side as she succumbed to her injuries hours later.
Meanwhile, a heightened pursuit of the fleeing suspect led the detectives to his rented house at Sagam Trading Centre within Kanyibwop village where items that will help in the investigations were confiscated.
Among them are a Jungle green sweater, a military pair of shorts, two pairs of desert storm jungle boots, and two TV sets (40 and 32 inches). Additionally, a laptop and a Rolex watch among others were recovered.
A woman found in the house was also arrested to help the police in probing the murder of the HR manager of Wells Fargo. It comes as DCI on Wednesday arrested two suspects linked to the murder of the slain Ayieko.
Detectives are meticulously examining all evidence, and forensic teams are conducting thorough analyses to uncover new leads.
