Thugs accosted and mugged a police officer attached to the Diplomatic Police Unit (DPU) in the early morning hours of Sunday, November 3.
Reportedly, the officer had left his residence in the Bypass area near Ruaka at 4:30am as he headed to work before the incident ensued.
Midway to work he decided to deposit Ksh1,500 in a local Mpesa shop. It was at that point that he was accosted by armed men who forcefully mugged him off his possessions.
According to statements recorded in the occurrence book (OB) in Karuri Police Station seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the police officer was accosted by three gang members who robbed him of his money and mobile phone.
“The police officer attached to the Diplomatic Police Unit who resides in the Bypass area near Ruaka about 6 kilometers East of the station was on Sunday at around 4:30am as he was going to deposit Kshs1,500 in a Mpesa shop accosted by three unknown men who robbed him the cash and his mobile phone,” read the report.
The report further showed the DPU was injured in the robbery as he sustained a stab wound from the attack by the three-member gang.
“The officer was hit with a blunt object on the head and stabbed with a sharp object on the upper torso near the ribs,” the report added.
The police is a specialized officer whose line of work is to provide escort services to government diplomats and the diplomatic community in the country.
The robbers managed to flee with Ksh1,500 and his mobile phone, leaving the police officer bleeding on the roadside.
Good Samaritans who passed by found the officer lying on the side of the road and quickly rushed him to a Nairobi hospital for specialized treatment.
Medical reports from the hospital indicate that the officer is recouping and is currently in stable condition.
It comes barely two days after the officers drawn from Kilimani Police Station gunned down two robbers along Tigoni road near Naivas Supermarket on Sunday morning.
The gang of three who were on a motorbike were caught red-handed in the act of committing a crime leading to police to open fire. One gang member fled the scene but the police have since launched a manhunt for the suspect.
