The main suspect implicated in the tragic death of a 22-year-old man was on Thursday apprehended following a nationwide search by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
The suspect, whose brutal actions were captured on video that went viral on social media on Thursday, October 31, is currently held in custody at Ruaraka Police Station.
An accomplice of the suspect is detained at Longisa Police Station as detectives intensify investigations to bring to book all the perpetrators involved.
The distressing sequence of events began when the suspect reportedly arrived at the victim’s residence in Teduet village, located in the Chemaner area of Bomet County before lodging accusations.
The suspect allegedly accused the victim of stealing his chicken and an altercation ensued that saw violence meted out against the victim.
The deceased was forcibly taken by the suspect from his home after the accusations escalated into what the detectives described as severe assault bordering on lynching.
According to the CCTV footage that made rounds on social media, the 22-year-old was hanged using a chain attached to a pulley, a horrifying scene that left him unconscious. Reports indicate that the suspect carried the victim and returned him to his home in a near-death state.
Unfortunately, the victim succumbed to the torture and wounds. This was confirmed at Longisa Referral Hospital where his body was transferred to.
The body of the victim is preserved at the facility's Morgue, awaiting post-mortem examination to unravel what led to his death.
In the wake of this incident, the investigators conducted a thorough search at the suspect’s residence where they recovered crucial evidence that will help in the prosecution of the case.
Among key evidence include a pulley and a chain believed to have been used in the assault that led to the death of the victim.
Additionally, an empty jerrycan believed to have contained diesel, which was reportedly used during the torture was also recovered. Other key items discovered are an article of clothing soaked in diesel further implicating the suspects. The suspects will be arraigned to face appropriate charges.
