As the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations enter their final days, reports have revealed that over 70 teachers have been apprehended for aiding in the exam malpractices.
It has been revealed that these teachers are at the heart of the leakage, taking photos of the papers and distributing them on social media.
According to an investigation by NTV, most of the exam cheating happens before the afternoon papers.
So how are the teachers aiding in cheating? Well, when the examination papers are opened, according to the Ministry of Education officials, invigilators either take photos or give them out for photocopying.
The leaked papers are then handed to the subject teachers, who are mostly employed by boards of management to quickly work out the answers, which then find their way back into the examination room before the exam begins.
The afternoon period is a prime time for cheating because, at this time, senior invigilators have already left the institutions.
The major players in the cheating web are said to be principals, supervisors, invigilators, teachers, non-teaching staff, and parents. According to the investigation, some parents allegedly pose as staff at the school to get access to the examination.
PS for Basic Education Belio Kipsang on Friday, admitted to teachers being the weakest link in exam cheating.
"The biggest problem in our examinations are we adults, the parents in most cases, because when we hear people saying there's a mobilization of resources to compromise our staff, the people who are mobilizing the resources are not our staff, it is we as parents," the PS stated.
The revelations come at a time when the Education PS denied that the exams had leaked. According to Kipsang, the major challenge they are facing is early exposure to the exam papers and not leakage.4
"One thing I want to affirm is that the exams have not leaked, because an examination leakage is where people get exposure to the exams maybe a day or two early. What we have been having is what we call early exposure, where people receive the papers the same they are receiving here.
"Once they are in school, as they distribute to the students somebody takes a photo of the paper that has already been opened. That one is not a leakage, it is an early exposure," said the PS.
The exams will be ending on November 22.
