At least two people have reportedly passed away while 46 others are currently receiving treatment after a suspected food poisoning in Luanda, Vihiga County.

The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, December 3, took place after the victims reportedly consumed contaminated rice and beans at a local church.

According to witnesses, the church members, most of whom originated from Luanda, had attended a ceremony when they were unknowingly served the contaminated food.

Moments after eating the food, the church members reportedly fell unconscious and were rushed to the Vihiga Sub-County Hospital where two people succumbed while receiving treatment.

While mourning the deaths, one of the agonised residents called on the area MP Omboko Milemba to intervene by facilitating the transfer of some of the victims to other hospitals.

"I have come here and found my brother dead. I am not sure whether he has been transferred to the mortuary or not. I plead with our MP Omboko Milemba to dispatch a rescue team," lamented one of the residents.

Commenting on the matter, Luanda MP Dick Maungu urged members of the public and the healthcare workers to jointly assist in taking the victims who were yet to be treated to hospital.

In a brief statement, Maungu confirmed that he had already contacted the area police officers to commence investigations into the matter and provide findings.

"We urge members of the public, our coordinators, and Community Health Promoters to assist those still at home and report the issue to relevant health facilities for assistance," MP Maungu said.

"We therefore urge the general public to be vigilant, especially on this holiday period of December. We wish all those hospitalised at various health facilities a quick recovery," he added.

In a similar incident in February this year, about 40 people in Kigumo Sub County, Murang'a were admitted to a hospital after eating contaminated meat from an infected cow.

According to a police report about 150 people purchased the meat from the owner of the cow which died from Anthrax. During the incident, several dogs also died from the poisoning.
