Two people lost their lives and 5 are nursing injuries after the vehicle they were travelling in collided with another oncoming vehicle along the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway on Sunday, January 5.
The accident that involved a head-on collision between an Eldoret Shuttle Nissan matatu and a public service vehicle bus took place near the Prison Bridge in Naivasha.
According to eyewitnesses, the bus was headed to Nairobi while the matatu was going in the opposite direction. Motorists were urged to exercise vigilance and avoid speeding, as people rush back to the city ahead of school reopening.
Those who sustained injuries after the tragic incident were immediately rushed to Naivasha Level 4 Hospital for specialised treatment.
The bodies of the deceased have since been transferred to the mortuary, awaiting a postmortem by the government pathologist.
The accident comes barely a day after five people got injured in a road accident involving two private cars near Nyakairo, Kinungi, along the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway.
After festivities, people are returning to their places, resulting in an increased volume of vehicles on our roads. As a result, the country has witnessed a spike in road accidents.
On Friday, January 3, ten people died and scores were left with serious injuries in a grisly road accident along the Eldoret-Kitale Highway in the Soy area.
The accident involved a public service vehicle belonging to the Great Rift Shuttle and a lorry which collided head-on, leaving the front part of the matatu severely damaged.
Between January and November last year, 4,282 people died on the roads, according to data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).
Of this, pedestrians account for 1,637 deaths, followed by motorcycles at 1,045, passengers at 788, and drivers at 369.
An addition of 372 passengers and 72 pedal cyclist deaths were reported as well.
