A family in Saika, Nairobi, is in mourning following the gruesome murder of their son, Conrad Nyabuto, at the hands of his estranged girlfriend last month.
To add insult to injury, they are now experiencing a delay in the delivery of justice despite there being sufficient evidence connecting their son's murder to his girlfriend.
Nyabuto bled to death after being stabbed 27 times when he visited his girlfriend in Kamakis on the night of December 17 to discuss their failing relationship.
“27 stab wounds is not self-defence. That is like you are killing a very dangerous wild animal, so we have been trying to cope, but it is not easy, as I have said,” the distraught father stated.
“There was reliable information that big people in the government were trying to interfere with the investigation. All we are praying for is that our late son will get justice for what happened. He will never come back, but at least the siblings, especially, will be a bit relieved when justice is served.”
Self-defence refers to the act of defending oneself from physical harm and is not often as brutal as Nyabuto's murder was, leading the family to suspect more foul play was involved.
In addition to this, it was reported that the girlfriend refused to open the door to the police, who showed up at the crime scene shortly after. Police are said to have spent two hours breaking down the door to the home.
“The police came and asked her to open the door, but she refused to. They spent around two hours trying to break the metallic door and found that Conrad had bled to death. The girl was lying next to him, but she had slit her wrists,” his mother narrated.
The delayed entry into the house and the fact that she had also tried to take her own life not only impended any life-saving measures on Nyabuto but also made her the main suspect in the crime.
She was taken into police custody, although the family believes not much is being done to hold her accountable for the murder.
She is expected to take a plea on Thursday at the Thika High Court.
The case is reminiscent of another such case early last month when another young man was stabbed to death by his girlfriend during a domestic squabble at their rented home in Kitale.
He died on the way to the hospital after neighbour came to his aid while the perpetrator fled the scene.
The Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) student was only a few days away from his graduation on December 5.
