Angry residents of Cianyi Kathera village in Mbeere North Sub-County, Embu County, have set ablaze a motorbike belonging to the area Assistant Chief.

According to reports, the Gitiburi Assistant Chief stood by and watched without intervening as houses were demolished.

The demolitions, which occurred in the early hours of Tuesday night, left four families counting their losses.

The operation, reportedly supervised by the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) of Siakago Police Station, targeted structures on disputed land.

The demolitions reportedly displaced several families, leaving them homeless and frustrated.

The incident sparked protests and unrest in the area, leading to the residents burning the assistant chief's motorbike.

According to the affected families, the land case is still pending in court and the demolitions were illegal.

Mbeere North Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Harisson Ndwili revealed that the sub-county security committee convened a meeting to address the incident.

Tensions between area chiefs and residents have been escalating due to contentious decisions made by local administrators. This is not the first instance of residents attacking a chief.

On Tuesday, January 21, enraged residents stormed the homestead of the Assistant Chief of Mavala Township Sub-location and set his houses ablaze.

The residents accused the assistant chief of colluding with some villagers to kill two suspected livestock thieves in the early hours of Tuesday.

Reports indicate that the residents retrieved the bodies of the two individuals from Malava Hospital before proceeding to the assistant chief’s home, where they carried out the destruction.
